Reproductive value, the stable stage distribution, and the sensitivity of the population growth rate to changes in vital rates

چکیده
The population growth rate, or intrinsic rate of increase, is the rate of growth that will be achieved by a population with fixed vital rates. The sensitivity of population growth rate to changes in the vital rates can be written in terms of the stable stage or age distribution and the reproductive value distribution. If the vital rate measures the rate of production of one type of individual by another, then the sensitivity of growth rate is proportional to the reproductive value of the destination type and the abundance in the stable stage distribution of the source type. This formal relationship exists in three forms: one for age-classified populations, a second that applies to stageor age-classified populations, and a third that uses matrix calculus. Each uses a different set of formal demographic techniques; together they provide a relationship that beautifully spans different types of demographic models. 1 Biology Department MS-34, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole MA 02543 USA and Distinguished Research Scholar, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research Rostock, Germany. http://www.demographic-research.org 531 Caswell: Sensitivity of population growth rate

Semi-Continuous Cultivation of Photosynthetic Cells in a Flat Plate Photobioreactor
From an engineering point of view, the effect of light intensity distribution on the stability of growth rate should be taken into account in designing effective photobioreactors and sustaining stable growth rates. In the experiments described here, in order to keep operational parameters at an almost constant level, a semi-continuous culture method was developed for cultivation of photosynthet...
متن کاملA Vital Rate Sensitivity Analysis for Nonstable Age Distributions and Short-Term Planning
There are multiple approaches to sensitivity analysis used to identify the age(or stage-) specific rate of reproduction or survival that most affects population growth—all of which involve evaluating effects on k, the dominant eigenvalue of the Leslie matrix. Management recommendations generated by these approaches can be difficult to determine, in part because results are valid only for popula...
متن کاملSensitivity Analyses of a Population Projection Model of Ring-Necked Pheasants
A large literature exists on population dynamics of ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) in North America, but there has not been an attempt to formulate a matrix model nor a sensitivity analysis of the relationships between vital rates and population finite growth rate (k) that can be used to guide management. We summarized demographic data available from a 5-year field study in Iowa, US...
متن کاملCrystal size distribution analysis of plagioclase in Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows in Dehaj-Javazm area, northwest of Shahre-Babak, Kerman
1. Introduction The rather limited Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows are outcropped in the Dehaj-Javazm area, north of Share-Babak, in the NW of Dehaj-Sarduieh magmatic belt as a part of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic assemblage (UDMA). The rocks contain significant amounts of plagioclase both as phenocrysts and microliths in the microlithic groundmass which play an important role i...
متن کاملCrystal size distribution in metamorphic rocks: an example for the relationship between nucleation and growth rates with overstepping
Crystal size distribution (CSD) in metamorphic rocks provide fundamental information about crystal nucleation and growth rate, growth time and the degree of overstepping. CSD data for garnet, staurolite, kyanite and andalusite crystals from the aureole demonstrate that the earliest formed of these minerals, garnet, has the highest population density and the shortest growth time. The last formed...
